Steps Through Time: Celebrating History Month in Chatham

The Soul of 02633

It is no secret that I have a deep love for Chatham’s history. My husband Scott and I live in a restored 1840s Sea Captain’s home right here in town, so I get to experience our coastal heritage every single day.

While the beach is usually the main attraction as we head into summer, June brings something truly special to our village: Chatham History Month. Sponsored by Historic Chatham, this annual month-long celebration is the perfect excuse to step off the sand and discover the incredible stories built into our streets.

If you are looking to explore the historic side of our community, here is your insider guide to Chatham History Month.

1. The Flapper Dresses at the Atwood Museum

Located on Stage Harbor Road, the Atwood Museum is the physical heartbeat of Chatham's past. The museum itself is housed in a pristine 1752 gambrel-roofed house.

  • What to See: Throughout the month, they are running fantastic mini-exhibits, including a rare display of 1920s flapper dresses in the old house, and a fascinating look at the history of duck hunting on Cape Cod.

  • The Atmosphere: Walking through these rooms feels like stepping back into an era when Chatham was a quiet, isolated fishing village relying entirely on the sea.

2. The Tech That Changed the World: Marconi Maritime Museum

Long before smartphones and modern fiber optics, Chatham was a global communications hub. Head down to Orleans Road to visit the Marconi/RCA Wireless Museum.

  • The Story: This National Register Historic site was once the largest US coastal station in the marine service. During WWII, it operated as the Navy’s secret Station C, where operators intercepted coded German U-boat messages.

  • Special Exhibit: Keep an eye out for their feature on the women of the military who served right here on the Cape during the war.

3. The Architectural Magic of Main Street

You don't always have to go inside a museum to feel Chatham's history. Main Street is essentially a living gallery. As you walk downtown this weekend, take a closer look at the structures around you. From the majestic pillars of the Eldredge Public Library to the classic cedar shingles of the early saltboxes, our town has done a magnificent job preserving its visual identity.

The Ultimate Insider Tip: Mark Your Calendar

While History Month runs all through June, the absolute highlight is the History Month Trolley Tour. This free, hop-on, hop-off trolley loops continuously through Chatham’s five major historic sites, including the Chatham Railroad Museum and the fully restored 1797 Godfrey Gristmill in Chase Park. It is the ultimate way to see the town through a historical lens.

Preserving the Legacy

Living in a historic home means acting as a temporary caretaker for a piece of American history. It requires patience, a respect for craftsmanship, and a love for the stories embedded in the original floorboards.

If you have ever dreamed of owning a historic Cape Cod property or want to know what it takes to preserve a classic piece of Chatham architecture, my door is always open. Let’s grab a coffee and talk about how you can find your own piece of Chatham’s legacy.
